James Otey will be the Head Varsity Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at Positive Day School. Coach Otey is from Roanoke, VA and attended William Fleming High School from 2002-2006. During his years at William Fleming he accomplished quite a bit by being 1st Team All-Region, 1st Team All-State, scoring over 1,200 points and becoming Blue Ridge District Player of the year two years in a row. After High School, Otey continued his basketball career at Virginia Heat Academy where he averaged 27ppg, 8ass, 5reb, and 2 steals per game. After two years at Heat Academy Otey accepted a full athletic scholarship to play under the legendary coach Steve Joyner Sr. at Johnson C. Smith University. Coach Otey was on the back to back 2008-2009 CIAA championship team which is only the third basketball championship in Johnson C. Smith school history. After College, Coach Otey played Semi-Pro basketball in Raleigh, NC from 2014-2018 where he averaged 25 pts, 9ass, 5reb and 1.5 steals per game. The Semi-Pro team that he played on was ranked as high as top 5 in the nation in 2015. In 2018 Otey injured his ACL in a game and began to focus more on coaching.
In 2014, Coach Otey began coaching Park and Recreation senior league and continued coaching for 4 years until 2019. In 2019, he became the Assistant Basketball Coach at Blue Lights College in Apex, NC where he coached All-American player Richard Campbell and recruited Jawan Browder who became Blue Lights College first player ever to have a triple double in the school's history. The next year Otey became the Assistant Varsity Basketball coach at Apex High School, where they had a short season due to COVID-19. Just recently June 17,2021 Coach Otey was inducted into the 2021 William Fleming Basketball Hall of Fame. Now Coach Otey is here with us at Positive Day School. We are very happy and excited to have Coach Otey as our new Head Varsity Basketball Coach where he brings his years of playing and coaching experience in preparing our players for the next level.
